Question: My 92 yr old mother has a swollen hand with very stiff joints in the middle fingers. Has been to GP and no bones broken and limited use of hand. Other hand is ok. He gave her some kind of salve but has done nothing. She has taken OTC pain relief at night to ease pain.

Brief Answer:
That could be a sighn of carpal tunnel syndrome .

Detailed Answer:
Hi i am Dr Ahmed Aly
thanks for using HealthcareMagic site ,
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns ..

I hope she feels better soon but i think she may have a sort of nerve entrapment usually the median or ulnar nerve . an EMG is very diagnostic in such cases .
In most of carpal tunnel syndrome patients medications like NSAIDs or painkillers like tylenol tabs with gentle massaging with topical anti-inflammatory gels , B12 vitamin supplements and muscle relaxants is effective in most of cases .
If pain persists steroid tabs or injections are prescribed or even endoscopic or surgical intervention options are recommended but after physical evaluation by her neurosurgeon for proper evaluation and management .

Wish you good health,
