Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: I am experiencing swelling in both ankles but the right side is much more noticeable. Have had these symptoms for some time but elevating the right leg always reduced the swelling, now it does not. There is no pain although it just doe not feel right. I have an excellent range of motion.
Can you speculate? Thank you

Thank you for writing on health care magic

Well the sort of swelling you are describing does go more with pedal oedema.

If the ankles are swollen but range of movement is good it rules out any arthritis of the ankles.

The next cause is pedal oedema that is fluid accumulation in the legs. It subsides on raising the leg as the fluid gets absorbed. I would like to ask you a few questions so we could guide you to find out the cause:

1. How Is your urine output? Is it adequate

2. Any symptoms of breathlessness or cough?

3. Any symptoms of swelling of the abdomen?

4. Did you get a recent blood tests done for liver kidneys urine and heart examination?

5. Any swelling in the calf?

6. Any pain in the knee joint?

We need to figure out if the kidneys and heart are OK firstly as there is some mechanism going on which is not able to remove this fluid. If all tests are fine lastly we need to see is the lymph blockade.

Do let me know these queries

Would try to guide you further

Pedal Oedema

Good evening

Sorry for the delayed reply. Was caught up in the duty. Thanx for your reply. WEll firstly i would like you to get the kidney function tests, liver function tests, 2 d Echo for your heart function and urine routine examination to look for any protein loss. If they are normal, then the next thing we need to look is for lymph duct blockade as poor lymphatic drainage can cause the swelling of leg which goes of in dependent portion. Since you are not having the other symptoms i asked, it does not look too serious, but one needs to evaluate. Lot of times it does happen there is no cause found for such swelling. But before that we need to rule out the ones associated
