Question: Hello Dr. Rynne. I recently developed a swollen right calf. It is not red, and has only minor pain, as well as a mild skin itch. I intend to see my doctor in the near future, but meanwhile I am concerned about the potiential problems. Thank you, Howard Beroff YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
Visit orthopedic surgeon.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

Why do you want to wait and see the potential effects of swollen calf ?

Myfriend, at your age with atril fib. and having swelling calf, you should not ignore all this and visit orthopedic surgeon for your physical examination, he may advise you fasting blood sugar to check diabetic status, color doppler to see present condition of your vessels of lower limb.

It may be initial stage of deep vein thrombosis, although no redness is present but remember, it will take very less time to turn red.

Potential problems or future problems may be deep vein thrombosis, cellulitis, osteomyelitis.

That is the reason I advise you to visit orthopedic surgeon.

Till then elevate the limb and apply compression bandage.

I hope you got the point.

Thanks,
