Question : This evening all at once my carotid gland on the left side just behind my ear and right at the bottom of the ear lobe started to swell. Please advise.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having swelling behind and below the ears. I would ask you few more details.
Is there any pain ?
As per your clinical details and photo, it appears to be lymphnode enlargement (upper jugular chain) or parotid gland swelling.
Pain full swelling always occurs due to infections (virus or bacterial infections involving ear, nose or throat).
Painless swelling at your age, should be evaluated. it could be simple benign or some times malignant swelling secondary to ENT lesions.
Presently, you can take simple brufen 400 mg twice daily for a couple of days, which can acts as both pain killer and anti inflammatory.
In case of persistence of swelling, you need to evaluate with your primary physician or ent surgeon for the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Doctor would go for FNAC or biopsy to rule out the cause.

There is no real pain as such just a little uncomfortable with the feeling of that side of the face being swollen. I have given myself hot and cold treatment. Should I do more? How soon should I see my primary physician?
