Suggest Treatment For Swollen Lymph Node In The Neck After A Wisdom Tooth Removal

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jul 2016
Question: Several months ago, I had an infected impacted wisdom tooth removed. A week or so before I noticed lymph nodes on same side on neck below jaw were swollen and excess burping. Could they be correlated (tooth was removed and there is no local infection remaining in tooth /gum area). Lymph nodes still swollen. Could the infection have migrated to the lymph nodes and have caused chronic digestion problems.?

Brief Answer:
No correlation between lymph node enlargement and burp

Detailed Answer:
hi.
thank you for posting query at HCM.

noticed your history and current presentation.
firstly, if lymph node are painful, red, or increasing in size , then visit treating physician asap.
if none of the above features related to lymph node, then observation is required for two to four weeks.it maybe localized mild infection. however, your advised to visit a ENT specialist to rule out ear and throat pathologies.

secondly, burp is usually experienced when increase amount of gas is present in the stomach. advice;
- avoid beverages
- avoid protein rich food for couple of days
- drink warm water
- avoid swallowing air while eating; keep your lips zipped whilst chewing food
- simethicone tablets OTC maybe used
- eat fresh fruits

wish you good and sound health.
hope to answer your concern.
any further questions are welcomed

My swollen lymph nodes are not painful although they are somewhat hard. Could their primary cause (they were noticed a week or 2 before infected wisdom tooth became sore and was extracted) be due to a migration of the infection to the lymph nodes? If so, should they remain swollen as long as they have (over 3 months after infected tooth was extracted (no infection remained at tooth site)?

Brief Answer:
if enlargement is NOT progressive, observation is sufficient

Detailed Answer:
hi.
thanks for getting back to me.

lymphadenopathy (enlarged lymph nodes) are usually observed in clinical practice as a sign of infection (localized or systemic).
in your case, most likely, it maybe secondary to the tooth infection but nodes should have returned to normal size by now ( 3 months later).
therefore, in my previous answer, i advised you to visit ENT specialist to rule out any ear and/or throat infection.

swollen lymph nodes usually return to normal size after the underlying cause has resolved; ranging from few weeks to couple of months.

furthermore, i advice you to visit treating physician if:
swelling is progressively increasing or size of node is increasing
OR
node swelling is accompanied with night sweats and/or fever
OR
nodes are hard and immovable

What organ is responsible for producing digestive enzymes? I have had to take digestive enzymes to avoid gas and bloating. It (gas and bloating) has reduced my appetite considerably..

Oddly taking 1 bayer asperin with cup of water after bed helps sleep and general discomfort related to stomach problems (probably due to reduction of inflammation)
Thank you for your patient answers

Brief Answer:
most of the digestive enzyme are produced by "pancreas"

Detailed Answer:
hi.
pleased to answer your queries subjected to my capacity.

pancreatic enzymes - as medication/supplements -are usually prescribed for patients with chronic pancreatitis and/or non-functioning pancreas.

Do not take this medicine unless your treating doctor feels it's requirement.

yes, in some published studies, anti-inflammatory drugs have proved to reduce inflammation in stomach. however, its not always the case.

advice for symptoms --- "gas and bloating":

1. decrease SALT intake, to as minimum as you can and eat less spicy food.
2. eat more fruits especially those rich in vitamin C (citrus fruits)
3. do NOT eat stomach full(mouth full) in any meal and you may eat have 3 to 5 meals a day
4. try to avoid drinking water at the end of a meal.
5. NO beverages (cold drinks, commercial juices)
6. you may use OTC simethicone tablets and probiotics
7. do NOT eat mouth-full (stomach full)
8. chew food well whilst lips zipped so air does NOT enter while chewing food

Hope this answers your concern.

Please describe the symptoms of chronic pancreatitis and/or non-functioning pancreas. I have had gas and bloating for several weeks. I can have an empty stomach but no appetite (no mouth hunger). Taking digestive enzymes helps with bloating but does not return appetite. Is there a correlation between my symptoms and chronic pancreatitis and/or non-functioning pancreas?

Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
chronic pancreatitis presentation - see below

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for getting back to me.

The most common presentation of chronic pancreatitis is "mal-absorption diarrhea" and weight loss (as usually most of the food is NOT absorbed)".

Mal-absorption diarrhea is secondary to lack of enzymes that help in digestion.

As the food is not broken down in the intestine especially protein and fats; there is in NO absorption rather diarrhea with a lot of fat content in the stool. Fat in stool OR greasy loose stool is known as steatorrhea.

Pancreatic enzymes help in better digestion and absorption. Therefore, your bloating symptom subsides.

Hope this answers your concern.
