Question: Hi I'm a 20 year old Female I've noticed swollen lymph nodes on the left side of my neck at first they were swollen and painful now it's just a mass and theres a couple that are supraclavicular and the one under my jaw is sore. I noticed this first going hiking and the swelling went down and then a few weeks later I was outdoors again and they were swollen again but went down however they remain there and they are firm. I had a CBC done and everything came back normal. Is this something I should be worried over?

Brief Answer:
For now, monitor only. Do not get too scared!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these swollen glands that you have reported. I have reviewed your information fully and this is suggestive of swollen lymph nodes in response to an infection in this area. It is my thinking that you might have had an infection like a flu, runny nostrils(allergies), etc while hiking. In response to this, lymph nodes increase in size to fight and contain the aggression.

Most patients who report swollen nodes to me are always scare of cancers. There are several factors which make this unlikely. The acute onset of swelling, the nodes being sore and present on multiple sites are really against a possible cancer. If this were one of your concerns, then be relaxed.

Resolution is often spontaneous after a few weeks. for now, I recommend that you stay calm and relaxed about this. Monitor only and am confident it would be okay.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
