Suggest Treatment For Swollen Tonsils With White Pus Discharge
Question: I had intercourse and got swollen tonsils with white pus a week later. Rapid strep test and culture were both negative. A week after that swollen tonsils came back with the white pus and my throat was very sore. I went to the ER and the strep test was negative again. I was given a rocephin shot then. Now a month after the ER visit the same thing is happening again. I have swollen tonsils with pus. It started with aching in my arms and a headache. No noticeable fever. I am on an antibiotic which I have been for 3 days and it still isn't getting better. Could this be related to hiv? I had a negative hiv test 2 weeks after the exposure, but I know that it can take longer to show on a test.
Brief Answer:
It may be due to HIV but difficult to say at present as test is negative.
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, welcome to HCM.
You had recurrent swollen tonsils with white pus since one week post exposure and not getting better even with antibiotics than I can suspect it may be due to HIV.
But as your HIV test result after 2 weeks is negative I can not relate it to HIV. So I will advice you to contact your ENT surgeon for this and go for some investigations to isolate the other cause if present.
As far as HIV is concerned, you can go for repeat testing after one month and then again after three months to be 100% sure about your HIV status.
Thank You
