Question: I am 57. My problem is always having loose motion sometime pellets like and loose liquid like. Tested with colonoscopy, endoscopy, abdominal X Ray etc. All results are negative. Going for 3-4 times motion daily, bloating in stomach and goes air out and sometimes difficult to pass. Taken Normaxin for first 10 days and continued for 5 days as Doctor advised and got relief. But again some days facing the same problem, whenever I have, I go for Normaxin. Is it ok or any problems I have, and taking Normaxin is correct. Pl. advice.

Brief Answer:
Irritable bowel syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

Your symptoms are indicative of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
There is no known cause for this but imbalances in gut flora (normal bacterial population in the intestine), stress, improper eating habits all play a role in triggering and aggravating this condition which results in Increased intestinal motility and poor digestion

Normaxin is a combination of drugs that help calm down your intestine but should not be taken without medic supervision.
It does not treat IBS but only provides symptomatic relief.

I recommend :
- quit smoking and alcohol (if you do),
-maintain healthy diet.
*Avoid refined and processed foods, sugars, caffeine and carbonated drinks.
*include whole grains, whole and fresh fruits and vegetables
*make sure you Chew your food well.
*fiber should be taken in moderation. Adequate Hydration is of prime importance. About 3 liters a day (only if not Contraindicated by other disease like heart or kidney disease)
*eat smaller but frequent meals. Again Chew food well.
*avoid fruit within an hour or meals.
*only sips of water with meals and for half hour afterward. Too much water with meals can prevent proper digestion
*there are culprit or trigger foods that worsen IBS. (potatoes, raw bananas, Chana dal, green beansbeans, cabbage, chickpeas). If at all you do eat these make sure it is cooked well.

Do this meticulously and monitor which foods or activities or emotional factors worsen your symptoms.
There is no cure but symptoms can be managed by lifestyle modifications and medications when severe.
Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Wish you good health.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
