Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Esophageal Thrush And White Spots On Tonsils

Question: Hi,
My son is 3 years old and has what appears to be esophigal thrush. I noticed he was hoarse a few days ago and his hoarse voice has not gone away. Today I took a flashlight and looked in his throat, there were a few white spots on his tonsils. He doesnt have white spots on his tounge but his breath does smell a little sour. He had been diagnosed with thrush just like this over the summer. Over the summer, he wasn't on antibiotics.....but got it from possibly milk bottles? He has been on antibiotics this fall and ended them a few weeks ago. Augmentin and Flonase, the nose spray steroid. Are there any other tests I need to do with him to rule out underlying diseases? He is eating and acting normally other than the hoarse voice, although he has been a little more thirsty than normal lately.

I want to make sure his immune system is functioning properly or there may not be diabetes?. Over the summer when he had thrush the first time, I was worried about cancer and the hospital did a Complete Blood count with differentials. They came back normal.

Should I be concerned this is the second time my 3 year old has had thrush?? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Thorough examination from Pediatrician required

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms XXXXXXX

Being a parent myself I understand your concern and apprehension.

First and foremost let me reassure you ,it is not due to cancer as it's unlikely at this age .

Thrush or Candidiasis usually affects the pharynx and tongue, involvement of Tonsil us less Likely. Whether the white patches are due to thrush or mild follicular tonsillitis can only be attributed after clinical examination.

Prolonged use of antibiotic and use of Steroid in any form are possible predisposing factors for recurrence of thrush.

I would suggest you the following

1. Thorough assessment from Pediatrician

2. Complete blood count

In the meantime I would suggest you the following

1. Warm saline gargling : To a glass of lukewarm water add 2 spoons of common table salt. Make child gargle the throat with it thrice a day.

2. Antifungal chewable lozenges in consultation with Pediatrician

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take care

Thanks so much for your answer. I will do a complete blood count if he needs to see the doctor--if the problem doesn't go away in a few days. He had a complete blood count done over the summer when he had the same kind of thrush and it was normal. Do you think I need to get a stronger anti-fungal (like flucanzole) instead of the nystatin? Because it is in his throat.

Brief Answer:
Nystatin will suffice

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms XXXXXXX

Local use of antifungal like Nystatin is sufficient, use of Flucanozole is for invasive fungal infection.

Do keep me updated.

Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy life

Deepak
