Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Gastritis And GERD

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Dec 2016
Question: Why am I still getting mild reflux even my gastritis is almost healed up. Taking 40 mg of nexium in am and Zantac as needed. Overall I feel great compared to 9 weeks ago. I would think 40 grams of nexium would stop the mild refluxing?? When I was on 20 mg before gastritis the reflux was all but gone???

Brief Answer:
Endoscopy to find underlying condition

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1) symptoms of gastritis and GERD are almost same but primary reasons for development of these symptoms are different. Thus symptomatic treatment would be identical in both conditions.
2) Gastritis is inflamed inner layer of stomach wall (swelling, redness, sometimes ulcer) due to irritation. GERD is reflux of acid content of stomach back into esophagus and producing irritation induced inflammation there (esophagitis in lower part). Most common cause for GERD is lax sphincter of esophago-gastric junction and hiatus hernia.
3) Thus you may feel symptomatic relief with medical treatment but your underlying condition is not treated.
4) Another possibility for long-standing severe gastritis is H.pylori infection in liast part of stomach which is responsible for gastritis and require specific antibiotic treatment in absence of which there is high chance of re-appearance of symptoms.
5) If you have not done upper GI endoscopy then I would recommend to do same to rule out H.Pylori infection, GERD, Hiatus hernia as you are experiencing re-appearance of symptoms after discontinuation of treatment.
