Suggest Treatment For Thick Blood In Mucus While Coughing And Weakness

Question: I developed a cold a couple days ago ... believe it to be viral. Onset was slow, and I thought it would run its course ... but now the hacking, while sporadic has produced a dense sputum ... with quite dark blood. My breathing is somewhat labored due to efforts not to aggravate the cough and subsequent expectorant. I have been laying down a lot with little energy. Is this at all normal, or does it sound dangerous if left untreated?

Brief Answer:
Its not normal and requires Antibiotic.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Greetings from Dr Divakara P
Thanks for posting your query.

Well it doesn't XXXXXXX to be viral but seems like a bacterial infection.

Bacterial infection doesn't get resolved on its own , it requires proper antibiotic course.

The fact that you have started having breathing difficulty indicates that the infection is getting severe . There is no need to panic but you need to consult doctor and get started on antibiotic.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask.

Regards.

I happen to have 8 amoxicillin capsules (500mg each) with me because I am travelling and I typically use them before visiting a dentist. I have a mechanical heart valve since 1992. Would it be wise to use these pills to self medicate since I will be unable to get to my doctor until tomorrow?

Brief Answer:
Yes it can be used.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for the follow up.

Yes Amoxacillin can be used as of now but if possible get a test called Sputum culture sensitivity test before using Amoxacillin.

This test will help us in deciding which is the right antibiotic for your infection. If you take Amoxacillin prior to giving sample for the test then it may affect the test result.

Hope this information was useful to you.
