Question : I have a something that looks like a pimple on my left tonsil. My throat hurts, almost like a burning sensation, so does my left ear, and the left side of my neck. I have a fever. I also feel weak, nauseated and dizzy. I went to see a doctor, and was advised to take Advil (Ibuprofen), and assured it is going to go away on its own. Should I go back for antibiotics?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics if fever persists or throat pain worsens after 3 days

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

-how long have you had these symptoms?
-what is your temperature?
- any body ache? Joint pains?
-was the pimple like thing present on your doctor's visit?

I believe that your doctor diagnosed you with a viral infection. The treatment for this is symptomatic and Includes pain killer, fever meds, warm fluids, warm Saline gargles, Hydration and rest.

I understand your concerns. However, if your throat was red and Inflamed, a Strep. Throat would have been suspected and tested for by your doctor.
Antibiotics are prescribed only for bacterial Infections as it does not help with the viral infection.
I recommend..
- adequate Hydration and rest.
- warm saline gargles.
-pain killers (ibuprofen, paracetamol). These work for fever as well.
-if you have a runny nose or develop one, blow it out gently, one at a time
-monitor you temperature twice a day.

If it is more than 100.4F, for more than 3 days, or if your pain worsens, you will need to visit your physician again and may need antibiotics.

Recovery from a viral Infection takes about 7-10 days. Just try my recommendations, it will help

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Hope you feel better

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
