Suggest Treatment For Thyroiditis
i was detected with thyroditis a month back. i had lost weight and there was a small swelling on the left side of the gland. there would be continous headache and i would always feel tired and would have temperature of around 99. a fnas was also done to detect the problem
I consulted an ENT and 2 General Physicians, the ENT and one physician prescribed me 12 days of omnacortil starting from 40 mg and tapering to 2.5 mg. the other physician prescribed me 21 days of steroids starting from 40 mg and tapering to 5 mg.
i chose to take 12 days course. every thing started to improve from the 2nd day onwards and till the 14th day i did not face any problem. after 14th day i started feeling uncomfortable again but the severity was much less.
now when i reconsulted the doctors they were divided in their opinion, one school of thought says that i should take painkillers for a month before stareting steroids again and the other says me to start taking steroids immediately for 30 days starting from 40 mg.
what should i do. i am 33 years mother of 2 children. my weight is 55 kgs
Check your thyroid profile first!
Detailed Answer:
Dear ma'm, Hi this is dr. XXXXXXX here. Thyroiditis is a state of infective gland. It passes through three phases over a period of 6 -8 weeks. So first things first, you need to know your thyroid profile i.e. tsh, t3, t4 and also please post your first thyroid report. As I told you, thyroiditis might get resolved over 6-8 weeks, so maybe the nightmare is over.
We as of now do not advise steroid unless the patient is very sick. A pain killer along with a beta blockers is enough.
Once the thyroiditis phases pass out we see what the patient settles for, hypothyroid or euthyroid status.
Accordingly further management is planned.
As of now, if you have done a nuclear scan , please send the report and also send a fresh thyroid profile report.
regards!
i am attaching the report of the profile test.
i am not taking steroids now. i feel sick in the morning. as the day passes i feel better, but nothing as compared to my normal self.
i want to know what has happened to me,
how will i get cured,
do i need to consult an endocrinologist,
what type of medication i need to take,
will i have to take medicine life long.
do i need to make any dietary changed, i am a vegeterian
there is only one report sent twice.
Detailed Answer:
hi ma'm,
the phase of hyperthyroidism is going on presently,
is it thyroiditis or actually hyperthyroidism , we need to confirm .
yes you may see an endocrinologist in your city , that would be a great. i am also endocrine physician.
if it is thyroiditis, which seems less likely looking at this report of 14/5 16, it does not require much medicine. it only requires time. it will be cured in 6-8 weeks. if it is hyperthyroidism, you need to be on antithyroid drugs.
mostly thyroiditis take 6 -8 weeks to recover and hyperthyroidism may take 6 months to 24 months depending upon the cause and the treatment.
diet does not actually play a role, but eating healthy is always the rule.
this is all about answering your queries. but seriously you need a nuclear scan for thyroid, i.e. 99 Tc uptake scan for thyroid gland. and also your one month back thyroid report.
regards!
