Suggest Treatment For Tingling In Feet And Thighs After Missing Insulin Dosage
Question: Hello,
I am type 1 diabetic. I ate last night without taking my fast acting insulin (Novolog) or long acting insulin (Lantus), and woke up with my feet and thighs tingling. I only feel the tingling sensation in my thighs when I touch them - feels as though they are numb. It is not painful, though slightly uncomfortable/weird. More so, I am worried this is a sign of nerve damage.
My sugar was at 454 fasting. I took 8 units of Novolog to correct the high sugar and cover my breakfast. After eating, my sugar is now at 157 but I still feel the tingling/numbness. Please advise.

in long standing cases if diabetes the nerves of the body start to get affected slowly. When that happens the sugars have to be well controlled. If by some chance if the sugars become how, the symptoms of neuropathy start. The same has happened to you too.
The best way to control the symptoms is to keep the sugars strictly under control. I'd you do that the chances are that the symptoms will reduce on their own.
Also, you can add a tablet called pregabalin. This medicine may help you recover from the symptoms and may actually help you further.
So good control of sugars and pregabalin should together help you well.

I was told that any tablets do not work with my diabetes, since I am insulin dependent (type 1, or juvenile diabetes). I have been diabetic for about 3 years - is it possible to have nerve damage in that time span?

First, you are right tablets do not help in type 1 diabetes. You are however mistaken if you think I am suggesting pregabalin for diabetes. Pregabalin is one of the few FDA approved medicines for diabetic neuropathy.
Second, it is said that diabetes can cause neuropathy within 5 years. The other factor is the control. Of the sugars have been high, it can happen earlier. And on your case diabetes was detected 3 years back. It may have been present for 2- 3 years or more before it Was detected. So you need to consider that as well.

Ok thanks for the clarification regarding pregabalin. Is it a medicine only for pain or treatment as well?

It's not a conventional pain killer. In fact it's not classified as a painkiller.
If you have too much pain, you can take tramadol sos.
