Question: I have 1/2 a pill with 18 on bottom half. There is a score mark.
Also my husband was told September 7 that he had a fracture on the outside portion of his big toe. The PA showed us the X-ray. He would not administer anything for pain except tramadol. It upsets his stomach. One week later we returned to the DR. (Orthopedic specialist). He informed us there was NO fracture and he had gout. Still no pain reliever. He was pointing to the INSIDE portion of the big toe. We were & still are. Can't take allopurinol-stomach again. Still swollen &a red. Has knee high walking boot. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Take a diet rich in vitamin C.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the toe can be due to gout. Since he cannot take any pain killers it is best to do a hot compress in the area. Taking a diet rich in vitamin C, dairy products and coffee is likely to help in improvement of symptoms.
Drink plenty of water daily to help the kidneys clear the uric acid. Reducing meat and alcohol intake will also help a little.
I hope this answers your query.

My husband CAN tolerate meds for pain however, the physician would not prescribe even a few to take at night so that he can rest. I am thinking he may have both a fracture and a flare up of gout. Why does it seem so difficult for a 60 year old man to get some relief from pain. I've even read that the healing process actually is quicker when the patient Is not in constant chronic pain.

Brief Answer:
He can try Tylenol Ds.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
He can take Tylenol DS if it helps. It is correct that he needs a pain reliever. But all the stronger pain medicines are prescription medicines only.
Hope my answer is helpful.
