Question: I now have refractory major depression and mood disorder. I have tried and failed many medications. My physician wants to add either zyprexa or seroquel. If I continue to feel like this I'm afraid I will need to be on disability again

Brief Answer:
Atypical antipsychotics are indicated in refractory depression

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Treatment of refractory major depression is one of the clinical challenge and often a time taking and exhaustive process.

I second the opinion of your psychiatrist as atypical antipsychotics such as seroquel and zyprexa are well indicated in treatment of refractory depression.

Although seroquel and Zyprexa both indicated in refractory depression but in my opinion a low dose of Seroquel should be preferred over Zyprexa. Although I do not keep data but in many of my patients a dose of 150-200 mg of seroquel helped tremendously. I am not against the zyprexa but my personal experience favors Seroquel in refractory depression.

I understand it is difficult to predict anything when it is refractory but please know that there is good chance of responding.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.
