Question: hi doc,was asking for the right drugs for my 5yrs old diagnosed with a typhoid fever 1/160.

Start antibiotics if symptomatic

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Widal test may be positive in asymptomatic persons and require rising titre for diagnosis of typhoid fever.
In case with symptomatic high grade fever or decreased total leucocyte counts the treatment should be given.
The recommended oral antibiotics are one of the following:
1) Ciprofloxacin 15 mg/kg daily for 10 -14 days (in your son about 300 mg).
2) Ofloxacin 15 mg/kg daily for 10 -14 days (in your son about 300 mg).
3) Azithromycin 10 to 20 mg/kg for five (in your son about 400 mg)
Injectables should be given in non responding patients.
Paracetamol 15 mg/kg 6hrly for fever.
Consult and visit a paediatrician for treatment prescription.

what abt cefixime?

yes, cefixime can also be given

Hello,
Yes cefixime too can be given in dose as prescribed below.
Cefixime orally 20 mg/kg per day-- in two divided doses for 10 to 14 days. (in your son around 400 mg daily.
Recommendations for choice of drug depends upon endemicity and resistant pattern but these medications in adequate doses may be useful and effective.
