Suggest Treatment For Urinary Retention Caused By Acute Renal Failure

Question: My mother has edema in her feet, ankles and lower legs. She has been on Lasix for four days at 20 MG a day. That usually takes care of it. Today's dose was upped to 40 MG at 12 Noon because the edema was worsening. It's been 2 hours and 15 minutes and she is not urinating. Just dribbles out a little bit. She has had problems with urine retention in her bladder in the past. I have noticed a very small sore on one ankle that is wet. Her blood pressure is 114/71 O2 is 95. She has an artificial Aortic pigs valve installed in 1999 and is 100% dependent on a pacemaker that was just replaced a month ago.She also has Dementia. Severe short term memory loss. It very difficult to know if she is urinating properly because she can't remember.

Thanks for query .
Based on the all the facts that you have posted your mother has edema over feet ,legs and she has not passed urine evn after giving 40 mg of Lasix .This is strongly suggestive of acute Renal Failure and needs to be confirmed by doing Rebal Function Tests .

As regards she not passing urine please try to put a catheter and see whether there is urine in the bladder or not .

Looking at her age and other long standing cardiac problems and dementia possibility of terminal illness can not be ruled out .

Please consult your physician for assessment and further treatment .

I am going to try an find a urologist out of town. The one we have using just has us seeing a nurse and she just doesn't get it. Thanks so much for guiding me
