Suggest Treatment For Withdrawal Symptoms Of Seroquel

Posted on Tue, 28 Feb 2017
Question: my wife has been on Seroquel for 3 months 1 in the am 1 in the pm. she told her doctor that she was gaining weight in spite of the fact that she was limiting her calorie and carb intake. she was also dizzy a lot. he suggested that she drop the am dose and just take the pm dose. she did and the weight gain slowed but she was still gaining. so last night she went without the night time dose she had a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep. This morning she woke up having a bad nightmare that stayed with her after waking. Could this be the result of not taking the Seroquel? should she continue taking the Seroquel or will the symptoms pass in a few day.

I was mistaken she is not taking Celebrex she is taking Cymbalta 60mg 1 per day.

Brief Answer:
The symptoms are due to stopping of Seroquel only

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

I can understand your concern. Seroquel is Quetiapine and is an antipsychotic drug and is associated with sleep. The drug is commonly used for sleep. The problem of insomnia and nightmares occurred due to stopping the dose of Seroquel only. This is the reason it is advised to reduce the dose of Seroquel by gradual reduction. Reducing the doses gradually will not cause these side effects.

What was her dose of Seroquel?

Was she taking SR tablets or plain Seroquel?

These side effects will go in 4-7 days by own too if she was on low dose of the drug.

Brief Answer:
Reduce the doses gradually

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

In that case if possible reduce the dose to 50 mg for next two weeks in the evening and after that 25 mg for two more weeks followed by complete stoppage.

This will not cause any rebound Insomnia or worsening of symptoms.

Can we cut the 100 mg tabs in half or should we get a new prescription?

Answered by Dr. Seikhoo Bishnoi (3 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
XR or SR tablet should not be cut

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Cutting the XR or SR tablet will reduce its effectiveness. Better to take new prescription of 50 and 25 mg tablets.

Plain tablet if marked can be cut in half.

Thanks
