Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic. Managing high blood pressure can be helped by eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, taking regular exercise, drinking alcohol in moderation and not smoking.
Cut down on the amount of salt in your food and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Salt increases your blood pressure so aim to have no more than 6g (0.2oz) per day. This is about a teaspoonful. Eating a low-fat diet that includes lots of fibre (for example, wholegrain rice, bread and pasta) and plenty of fruit and vegetables helps lower blood pressure. Fruit and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals and fibre that keep your body in good condition. Aim to eat five 80g portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
Apart from being bad for the liver, alcohol will increase your weight so an attempt to reduce alcohol would be beneficial.
Drinking more than four cups of coffee a day may increase your blood pressure. However, you do not need to cut out caffeine entirely.
Being active and taking regular exercise lowers blood pressure by keeping your heart and blood vessels in good condition. Regular exercise can also help you lose weight, which will also help lower your blood pressure. This can include brisk walking or gardening.
Smoking in itself does not cause high blood pressure but it puts you at much higher risk of a heart attack and stroke in the presence of high blood pressure.
Avoiding stressful situations and practising relaxation can also help manage high blood pressure.
