Suggest Treatment To Cure MRSA Abscess
Question: My father went to the ER on march 2 nd 2014, with fever. After so many analysis they found out with an X-ray that he had an abscess filled up with pus,and necrotic tissue in his but, they admitted him, also when they made an incision to drain it, they found out that he has MRSA in the wound. It was a big abscess the size of an orange. It is still draining, the doctors send him back home , after just 2 days. Saying that he was going to die with a sepsis, but he is still alive and eating well, he is 92. He started just yesterday with Bactrim DS 3 times a day and mupirocim and Santyl ointments , because he accepted to do it. The questions are: for how long really the treatment should be? It will cure his MRSA? Is the wound heal after the treatment is done? Is the dosis right? Is there anything else that we can do? Usually the MRSA willcome back in the future, but how long it will take to happen? Is the bactrim the best oral drug, or there are other that can help? Hope to hear from a doctor, thanks.
Brief Answer:
Septran needs to be switched
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to healthcare Magic!
MRSA abscess is life threatening issue at this age but only when infection reaches the blood stream.
An abscess is serious issue but not that dismal.
Send a repeat culture of blood and pus right now.
Septran is a poor choice for MRSA.
The ideal drugs are Linezolid or Teicoplanin and must be started.
Topical medicines are fine and should be continued.
Doses of these drugs will be decided by local physician.
If fully recovered then MRSA do not come back as is believed by laymen.
Keep the local area of abscess clean, dressing daily and avoid contact with water.
I hope the advise would be informative and useful for you.
Take Care!
