Question: I used Monistat 7 days at the end of February as I had all the symptoms of a yeast infection. Once the treatment was complete, I still had vaginal discomfort as well as vulva stinging. I had urine tests done at my doctor's since I could not have a pelvic exam at the time because I had my period. Urine texts were negative. My doctor prescribed 1% cortisone cream to apply to vulva. The following week I was able to have a pelvic exam and lab results showed trichomoniasis. Both my partner and I took metronidazole for 7 days. I completed the meds March 31. A second pelvic exam showed no yeast or vaginosis so all negative now. This is now 11 days after treatment and I am still having vaginal itch, pain and vulva stinging. Yesterday was very uncomfortable. This morning I took a bath I put baking soda in the water as I had done that before and it soothed and helped. This morning I applied the 1% cortisone cream. I still have discomfort. I am in tears I even inserted a garlic clove in my vagina overnight. I have thought of using Polysporin on inner and outer lips. I called a Gyno clinic and the wait may be a year depending on the case. I am desperate, it's affective my life so much!
Brief Answer:
PELVIC EXAM IS A MUST.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Trichomoniasis is known for recurrence / persistence.
Your symptoms point to one of these.
It is essential to have an internal exam, specifically a vaginal swab and culture, as you might be harbouring a metronidazole - resistant strain.
Repeat medication / tinidazole might be required.
Also, avoid having unprotected sex till this is sorted out.
I would not recommend self medicating as that might worsen your symptoms.
When you completed the medication, at any point of time, did you feel relieved or better ?
Please let me know this.
Using Polysporin would not help, if trichomoniasis has lingered.
For symptomatic relief, you can use aloe vera gel or cold compresses, though the issue will persist till a pelvic exam is done and a conclusion arrived at.
Please feel free to discuss further.
A vaginal swab and culture was done to diagnose Trichomoniasis.
When I finished treatments on March 31 (Monday) I got a second vaginal swab and culture was done on April 3 (Thursday) and clinic said yesterday April 10 results were negative (negative yeast and negative vaginosis).
The clinic had told me zero yeast the first time and my doctor gave me the news of Trich when I saw her at her doctor's office.
Yes once I completed treatment it seemed better and less stinging. A bit of discomfort but not as bad.
I thought I was healing.
