Suggest Treatment To Cure Side Effect Of Bactrim
Question: Hello, I recently ( within the last 3 weeks) had a reaction to Bactrim. Was pretty sick. In turn Either a stone or whatever is was ticked off my liver, my enzymes are elevated...My bilirubin up to 3.4 my stools are no longer a pale color and urine has returned to yellow. My liver enzymes as of 4/8/14 were half of the amount they were on 4/4/14. however my bilirubin went up by just 0.1. (at 3.4) on Tuesday. My question is when will the ITCHING stop from all this my Lord I cant sleep at night because of it. Benedryl was NOT effective in stopping this itch. I was prescribed Hydroxyzine 25mg and even 2 tabs really isn't much relief. When will all of this itching stop? and should I be worried about bilirubin rising more? FREAKING OUT!!!

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
I would like to have some more information before I can given my opinion.
1. Was any scan done? Can I have the scan report?
2. Can I have the complete report of the liver function?
3. Any other tests done?
You can take ursodeoxycholic acid 15mg/kg/day which may provide some relief from itching.

The ultrasound was done on 4/5/14. This cleared any issues internally except they said there was a swollen lymph node but nothing concerning. Labs were drawn on 4/5/14 and 4/8/14. I will give you the results the first number for each was the results on the 5th and the second number will be the results on the 8th. Here goes. BUN: 6. then 8. Creatinine, Serum 0.47 then 0.50. Total Bilirubin 3.3 then 3.4. Alkaline Phosphatase 138 then 125. AST 103 then 56. ALT 437 then 273. A/G ratio 1.1 then 1.1. Globulin 3.4 then 3.4. All other tests were normal and within normal limits.

Hi,
Your ALT and AST are very much out of range.
You need to undergo few other tests to look for possible cause of deranged liver function.
Viral markers, auto immune panel, metabolic panel are to be done.
Meanwhile you can follow the advice I gave you in my previous post -
You can take ursodeoxycholic acid 15mg/kg/day which may provide some relief from itching.
