Suggest Treatment To Regularise Periods

Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

I have been taking opinions from you for online. I want to reset my treatment process for B/L PCOD and irregular periods. What should be my next step to get regular periods? I wish if you can advise on natural ways instead of medication if possible?

A brief history for you.
I am already on Metformin 500, Folic Acid supplements regularly for 6 months. I am 27 yrs and my husband 31 yrs old. My husband had immotile sperms up to 65% though the sperm count is very high (90 mill/ml)compensating the immotile sperms. So The local Infertility specialist was not worried and suggested conservative treatment with a short course of antibiotics and with LFM to retest after 3 months. I am trying to lose weight.

My past periods days were like this XXXXXXX 15 – I only had spotting on 26th January
March 15- I again had spotting in 5th March.
April 15- I had period on 4th April
May 15- I had period on 11th May XXXXXXX 15- I had period on 16th XXXXXXX

I started Glycomet SR , MCBM from February 2015 to till date. I also had fertipro for 3 months. I had Dupaston for 2 weeks from 20th March, then in April I had Dupaston from 30th April to 4th May. I started CCQ-50 from 12th May for 5 days (Morning & Evening) and took fertigyn 500 IU on 20th May.

Earlier in the past I had to go on DRONIS 20, for 2 – 3 months and it helps gain regular periods but when I stop it the regularity soon vanishes in 3 months. I would not want to go on medication.

What should be my next step to get regular periods? I wish if you can advise on natural ways instead of medication if possible?

Brief Answer:
Weight loss is the key

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, thanks for having faith in my advice. Infertility treatment is a bit distressing, consisting of innumerable investigations, medications and the associated stress and anxiety.
The best effective way to regularize the periods and improvise hormonal status and hence increase the chances of conception in a PCOS patient is to reduce weight by lifestyle modification like:
1. Jogging/running
2. Aerobics/ Yoga
3. Dietary management with approximately intake of 1600 Kcal /day with avoidance of oily and high calorie food.
4. Meditation for relieving stress.
You should continue folic acid and metformin.
If you wish, you can stop all the other medications and discontinue the infertility treatment for a period of 6 months, so that you get time to reduce your weight and get your period regularized.Even 5% reduction in weight is known to make the periods regular and increase the chances of natural conception by 60%.
Moreover, if your husband smokes, takes tobacco or alcohol, then he should stop it immediately. He should also get a semen culture and sensitivity test to rule out infection, which is one of the major cause of increased immotile sperms.
Be positive, hopeful and do not take stress at all.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
