After 3 months of medication, diet control and medication if the Cholesterol level comes down can the medice be discontinued ? what are the side affects of this medicine !
Brief Answer:
you must continue it
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Such high level of cholesterol increases risk of heart attack and stroke. It has been observed that those with LDL above 180 need life long statin. In the present era of modern life style it is not possible to maintain uniform pattern of diet, exercise round the clock throughout the year.Hence life long medicine is needed. If you have no other risk factors your treating doctor may suggest alteration in dose.
There are mainly 2 common side effects .
1.liver dysfunction which can be prevented with careful monitoring of liver enzymes and reducing the dose of statin. For this you should monitor liver enzyme SGPT
2 Effect on muscles .There may mild bearable muscular aches to significant weakness of muscle called myopathy.Again for prevention we have to monitor enzyme called S.CPK.Depending upon level one may need to modify dose or stop medicine .mild aches can be prevented by emperical administration of vit.D.
I hope I have satisfied your query.
My best wishes
