Suggest Ways To Lose Weight

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Nov 2016
Question: I am 80 years old and have battled the scale for years with some success with weight watchers program thru the years, but recently starting last February I have gained14lbs. I got careless about weighing myself weekly and enjoyed several trips which meant enjoying food and beverage. Is there another way besides going to weighwatchers program at my age?

Not a question but added info..last blood test cholesterol, and glucose were in the normal range; fasting blood test done in May of this year.

Brief Answer:
Some pathologies should be excluded.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM!
I appreciate your healthy way of living. Regarding to your weight gain i would suggest prior to going to a dietitian to rule out some pathologies that cause weight gain or difficulty in loosing weight. You should check;

-Thyroid hormonal level (TSH,FT4)
-Cortisol level at 24 hour collected urine
-Electrolites (NA,Potassium,Cl)
As there are 6 months since you checked glucose level and cholesterol i would suggest to check them again as you have put on weight during this period.

It will be a pleasure to help you further. Please do not hesitate to attach the results.
Wish you good health!
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta

I am seeing my primary care provider I thesen Dec. Would she be the one to ask to check these pathologies or do I need to see an internist?

I hear that vitamin D deficit has something to do with not being able to lose weight? Ive never been told there was a deficit, but am curious.

Brief Answer:
Yes, you may check Vit D also.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back!

I think the primary care provider is able to check for these pathologies. You may discuss with him about these test and if he notices other signs during clinical examination he should ask for these tests.

Regarding the Vitamin D deficiency, it may cause a slight weight gain (up to one kg). If you eat a healthy diet ( with fish, sea food, diary products etc.) and get enough sun exposure then Vit D deficiency is less likely.

If not, then you can ask your physician only to check it.

Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
