Suggest Ways To Manage Adverse Effects Of Taking Wellbutrin-XL And Wellbutrin-SR Together
Question: Query for Dr XXXXXXX Solanki,Thank you, doctor, for following up.
My doctor thinks it is not OK to cut 150 mg Wellbutrin XL in halves to increase the dosage from 150 (on the way up to 300 or even 450 mg eventually). He thinks I should supplement the 150 XL with a 75 mg SR instead. Mixing XL and SR upsets my stomach a lot more than taking one-and-a-half XL. Have you had experiencing mixing XL and SR? Your treatment protocol appears to be to just cut an XL in half rather than supplement with a 75 mg SR. What is your opinion about the best approach to get to 225 mg of Wellbutin? Thank you.

Thanks for follow up.
Probably I have never mixed XL and SR preparation but yes I have used one after other in same patient.
You face stomach upset when you mixed up both preparation.This is likely due to releasing of drug from both preparation initially as well as continuously in more amount when you take both at a time(or with short duration apart).
In your case I would like to suggest following approaches to avoid such problem.
- Take XL 150 in morning and SR 75 at night time(12 hours apart). This will not cause high level of drug at a time in stomach and no upset in your stomach.
- Other approach I mention in previous answer is cut XL 150 in to half to reach to 225 mg. But you are telling that your doctor is not allowing.
And yes the one approach which I prefer always is go to 300 mg directly from 150 mg.Believe me there is no need of such gradual titration if you can tolerate 150 XL. Most of the patients can tolerate 300 XL in divided dosage as they can tolerate 150 XL.
