Suggest Ways To Manage Pain When Diagnosed With Fibromyalgia

Posted on Fri, 14 Oct 2016
Question: I have been in awful pain associated with Fibromyalgia for a number of years. The last 6 -9 months have been awful. I'm being prescribed OXY and it works to an extent, but I want off this drug. Friends of mine who live in other states have been prescribed CBD Oil with incredible success. (I live in Florida.) Three days ago I saw a Rheumatologist who is licensed to prescribe what I want to try to get my life back. According to what I was told she can prescribe CBD Oil for Lupus, Rheumatoid, and a host of other conditions, but not mine. There must be another way for me to obtain this extract. There are centers now being established all over the state and I must admit to being disheartened that my specific type of pain doesn't appear significant enough. (Would love to have whomever made this ridiculous decision to live inside my body for a week. Then they would feel differently.) It was also pointed out to me that CBD Oil is only used as a LAST RESORT. And as I too pointed out that here you have a patient who WANTS to stop taking an opiate OXY, and I'm given the impression that this level of narcotic just qualify for an oil with very few side effects. I should add that I am 69 years old. Don't smoke or drink and also have IBS and type 2 Diabetes.

Brief Answer:
Varies provider to provider.

Detailed Answer:
First, Oxy is not likely to work with fibromyalgia. Ok, first, fibromyalgia is like saying I have a temperature. Sure, often it is 98, Sometimes it is 104 that can be from overwhielming infection or being in a hot car.
One patient I have with fibromyalgia has it from chemical exposure. Many of them have it due to plain depression. Many of them the diagnosis was given by not very intelligent people and they have lumbar disk disease but somehow got labeled fibromyalgia for no apparent reason. Oxycodone is inappropriate for all of them but the lumbar disk people. Exercise, physical therapy, warmth, stretching, anti-depressants, muscle relaxants are appropriate for fibromyalgia.

It is unproven if the quite variable marijuana extracts work on any fibromyalgia patients. All of whom respond well to fake drug (placebo). If you can get hold of some you can see if it is even worth pursuing. Going to a state in which it is plain legal is one option.

I used to run 3 days a week.
Played Racquetball twice a week.
Was rated in the top 10 of all amateur Racquetball players in Northwest Florida.
Carried a 1 handicap in golf.
Won many tennis tournaments.
Had scholarships for soccer and baseball, but got drafted.
Played shortstop on the Air Force team for a few years.
The point of all this is that exercise and being physically fit has been an important part my life and life style. So I still try to exercise, but the pain is very limiting.
So I'm aware of what you've mentioned so understand my frustration when I can barely get out of bed in the morning because every muscle in my body from the neck down aches so badly, if it wasn't for small doses of oxycontin I'd have to crawl to the bathroom.
I was in Vietnam. Some, though limited exposure to Agent Orange. So I believe something significant occurred I'm my life and the diagnosis by 3 separate doctors was spot on and not the result of less than intelligent people. Quite frankly, I've never experienced that label hung on a doctor whose opinion differs from yours .
Anyway, as I stated earlier, Florida authorized licensed doctors to prescribe CBD Oil about 6 weeks ago. But not specifically for Fibro. My question was, based on your opinion and experience what "type" of doctor, like a Rheumatologist, as an example, might justify the trial use of CBD Oil on another component which contributes to the tag, Fibromyalgia. Like depression and though I was prescribed Xanax it did nothing for me other than make me sleepy. Tramodol provided some relief, but I continually broke out in hives.
Note: my mother and Grandmother were diagnosed with the same thing.

Brief Answer:
It isn't the specialty as much as the philosophy

Detailed Answer:
Opinions are quite divided on marijuana with a significant minority just wanting to prescribe as much to as many people as they can. So, there are going to be some who will be very open to trying it. Frankly just finding some numbers and asking.

Oh, if you get hives from it then Tramadol is a very dangerous choice.
