Suggest Ways To Manage Severe Pain While On Oxycodone

Posted on Mon, 27 Mar 2017
Question: I had back surgery 3 weeks ago, with extreme pain. I have been taking Oxycodone 10 mg x 2 tabs every 4 hours, plus 10 mg valium. I also am on antidepressants, have been for years.. I've started really feeling depressed yesterday, and I haven't had any issues with depression for over 10 years. How can I wean off quickly, but safely from the pain medicine? I have other meds also that were prescribed prior to surgery that I can change to if it will help the step down. I have hydrocodone, with 5 or 7.5,
and Tylenol #3 with codine 300- 30. One more things to add, I have been on ativanf for about 10 ten years as well. Obviously not taking it with the valium but I did leave off the valium today and went back to the ativan for the anxiety needs. Can you please offer some help? I haven't have ad oxy since early this morning but I did take some Tylenol # 3.

Brief Answer:
Stopping opioids gradually, other drugs may be used.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HealthcareMagic.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Since you had surgery, the pain should be diminished gradually, so, in my opinion, you should be treated with other pain medications, besides opioids.

You can stop gradually oxycodone, and could start an anti-inflammatory drug (ketoprofene, naproxene, piroxycam ) together with tylenol+codeine.

Ativan and diazepam are both benzodiazepines, and you should use only one of them to treat your anxiety.

Diazepam has good muscles relaxer proprieties too, so, you can use it.

In conclusion, you should discuss with your Doctor (since all these are prescription drugs) about stopping gradually strong opioids, and start a new treatment regimen with one NSAID, tylenol+codeine and diazepam.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.
