Question: Hi there, this is regarding my father. He is 67 years old. Recently he has been treated with Lung Cancer. However, he is not aware of what treatment he has been through. Although we dont want to disclose this to him so earlier but eventually he will come to know. Please let me know how to keep him motivated. He has now become very impatient and does not want to talk to anybody. Please suggest how to deal with this

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear XXXXXXX
Welcome to HCM.

I completely understand your concerns for your father.

Telling about the cancer can generate intense emotions in anyone. It difficult to break this bad news to your loved ones.
But then, you have to do this. I have some suggestions for you which will make your task a bit easier:

1. The first important thing is that you must know how private your father wants to keep this information of his lung cancer. It is always a good idea to just involve only the most significant people like your mother and sister in this discussion.

2. Whenever you approach him, you must be calm. Never look anxious.

3. Avoid any distractions while discussing these issues.

4. Try to know how much he knows about this, how much he expects to know about this and how much he will be able to bear.

5. Give information in small chunks.

6. Identify his emotions and acknowledge it. Validate his emotions to make him feel comfortable.

7. Assure him that you and whole family are with him all the time. Do not confront him at anytime.

Hope you find these suggestions useful.

Feel free to ask further.

Take care.
