What Causes Persistent Cough With Phlegm In A 22 Year Old?

My husband is 82 years old has smoked since the age of 13. He has a persistent cough with phlem, he is 6 foot tall and weighs 121 pounds. BMI=16.2. He is fatigued and sleeps 12 to 15 hours a day. He had a case of shingles 2 weeks before Christmas. He is not going to go to a Doctor and wants no intervention. At 82, I get that. Do you think he is in the last 6 months, I of course, believe that he has stage IV lung cancer.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

There are many benign causes of persistent phlegm, besides lung cancer. For this reason, I would recommend performing a chest X-ray study and some blood lab tests (complete blood count, PCR, ESR). You should discuss with his doctor on these issues.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
