Suggest Ways To Prevent Diabetes While Treating Metabolic Syndrome
Its all about your commitment towards lifestyle modification.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your question.
I can understand your concern.
First I want to discuss about Prediabetes:
- Criteria for diagnosis any one or more of followings-
1) Fasting plasma glucose level 100 to 125 mg/dl.(Impaired Fasting Glucose)
2) 2 hours post 75 gram glucose load plasma glucose level 140 to 199. (Impaired Glucose Tolerance)
3) HbA1c 5.7 to 6.4
Progression to Diabetes from Prediabetes over period of 5 years.
- HbA1c 5.7 to 6.0: 9 to 25 % progresses to Type 2 diabetes over next 5 years.
- HbA1c 6.0 to 6.4: 50 % progresses to Type 2 diabetes over next 5 years.
As you have strong family history of Type 2 Diabetes & current Prediabetes status you are likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes in future, though time period is not certain.
But you can definitely postpone the development of Type 2 Diabetes with your efforts to change your life style.
I will advise you-
1) Weight loss.
2) Diet: Calories restricted, fat restricted diet with adequate proteins and vitamins and minerals according to your BMI (Body Mass Index) which need to discuss with dietician and diabetologist.
3) Exercise: At least 150 min per week of moderate intensity of physical activity.
Simple measures like 30 min of brisk walking daily, use of stair case whenever possible, avoid use of vehicles whenever possible, cycling may also help.
4) Regular check up of blood sugar level, blood pressure, Lipid profile, HbA1c level, urinary albumin creatinine excretion ratio.
5) Avoid alcohol, smoking.
6) Metformin may be considered to prevent progression to Type 2 Diabetes in case of Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) and HbA1c level between 5.7 to 6.4 % if BMI is >35 after consulting your diabetologist.
So don't lose hopes it is all about your commitment towards lifestyle modification.
Hope I have answered your question.
