Brief Answer:
Bland diet

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Amylase is an enzyme secreted by the pancreas. Its level in blood rises when due to some reason the enzyme leaks out from the ducts and enters into blood stream. It is therefore an indicator of pancreatitis. But a level of 130 U/L is quite low and is equivalent to mild oozing. Nevertheless, the damage to pancreas cannot be ignored. It needs to be given time to recover. But with each meal, especially fatty and protein containing ones, the pancreas is triggered to secrete enzymes and the healing done until then, becomes undone. There are therefore two solutions. First is to be on bland diet for some time (a week or so at least). The next is to get admitted in a hospital and remain on intravenous fluids for sometime, with complete stoppage of oral intake of food.

In my opinion, in your case, a bland diet will suffice.

Many Thanks for the advice Doc, However does my blood sugar have anything to do with higher Amylase levels ? I have been on diabetes medication for some years which is as mentioned earlier - Glycomet 500 SR along with semi -diaonil when my blood sugar spikes on certain foods as I check my sugar daily and of late I have noticed that my sugar levels have been climbing with an average blood glucose of 206 which I guess is high and my current medication is not lowering it.

Of late I have been having light to medium constipation and had gone in to do ultrasound of the abdomen but that did not show anything negative.

Do I need to do a barium meal test to check if I have any intestinal blockages / obstructions and could that be the cause for my constipation.

Brief Answer:
Switch to insulin for control of blood sugar.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. It so happens that both the amylase as well as insulin are secreted from the pancreas, though by different types of cells. Insulin regulates our blood sugar levels. I would insist you to shift to injectable insulins for proper blood sugar control. A combination of basal (long acting) insulin and mid to short acting insulins is to be used. It may sound cumbersome but numerous people across the globe are drawing its advantage.

For relief of constipation you need to take plenty of green leafy vegetables as well as fiber supplements like psyllium husk regularly. You have to back it up with regular exercise and morning walk.

I do not see any justification in getting a barium meal test done.
