Suggest Ways To Restore Facial And Orbital Fat After Weight Loss

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jan 2016
Question: About 2 years ago I experienced extreme weight loss to the point of malnutrition. It caused sunken eyes and I even lost a strip of fat on each side of my nose close to the eyes. This's area always has a slight feel of discomfort or irritation now. One doctor told me that orbital fat changes with large amounts of weight loss or weight gain. I have gained 40 pounds but my orbital fat hasn't come back. Do u know if it will if I keep gaining weight? I don't want to do surgery. How much weight or fat do I need to gain. If orbital fat cells shrink shouldn't they also expand again like all other fat cells?

Brief Answer:
It has no clear correlation to gain orbital fat alongwith weight gain !

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for consulting and your trust in HCM means a lot to me as a Physician.
I have completely reviewed your health query, and well realize all those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

I feel really sorry for the situation you are facing and are in discomfort regarding the facial looks.

Actually when it comes to the weight loss, it is a rule for major population groups irrespective to the ethnicity and geographical distribution that there is loss of the facial fat including orbital one. But gaining weight back, does not always cause a gain in facial fats (as you ask about the facial fat cells). It happens in some people with gaining weight but some doesn't get it back so fast as they lost it. If lifestyle changes are sustained and body is gaining weight and remains in normal healthy limits, with passage of time facial looks may get better again.

You need to keep:
Balanced and healthy diet containing all the major constituents like proteins, fats and vegetables in a proportion.
Taking Plenty of water and fluids.
Proper physical activity. You may join the gym and follow as the gym instructor guides.
Body Mass Index (BMI) BETWEEN 18-24.9. This is the normal healthy limit.

Your Target:-
If you keep a normal and healthy BMI aforementioned, and there is no major disease, yes you may regain the facial fat and orbital fat and look healthy.

Hope I answered all of your queries. Let me know if you have further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you. Thank you for your response. I don't think my messages can relate the desire I have to fix this problem. Yes the look of it discourages me but it also feels slightly different all the time. It has an irritating feel. Is fat grafting a solution? I do not currently have any diseases. I just need fat under my eyes. Do u know how long the results of a fat grafting procedure would last?

Brief Answer:
Yes, fat grafting is a procedure to be opted in if you want for!!!

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for visiting back HCM for a follow up query. We here are working hard to ensure quality health services for you. I appreciate your trust in HCM.

Yes I can well realize the health worries you have regarding the facial impressions. You need not worry much as with passage of time and keeping a balanced lifestyle you will possibly get good looks (if there is no disease obviously).

But if you are willing for the fat grafting, yes it is also a good option in cosmetology and aesthetic surgery. In this procedure we inject either fat or the filler substances in the periorbital areas of your choice. I usually recommend to go for fat injection (not the fillers) as fillers get absorbed and needs a repeat surgery time and again and also they are more prominent and don't fill up evenly on the face.

Fats last longer and also are not so prominent as the thinner get. So I recommend if you want to go for that as this is already in practice and is very popular procedure.

Thanks for your response. Do u think structural fat grafting is better? I have read when fat is grafted in smaller layers it has a better chance to develo blood vessels and survive longer. If I opt for surgery how long could I expect the results to last? Also, can u give a ballpark figure on how much it would cost? And lastly what does the average person do when the fat transfer is absorbed by the body after a few years and they are back to square one? Would it even be worth it? Thanks again

Brief Answer:
Yes layer grafting is better and mostly we perform structural technique!!!

Detailed Answer:
I really appreciate your concerns and happy to assist you today.

For your convenience and to make sure nothing is left unattended I will answer your queries in the order asked.

Q. Do u think structural fat grafting is better? I have read when fat is grafted in smaller layers it has a better chance to develop blood vessels and survive longer.

Ans:- Yes it is better to layer up injecting grafts for fats. Yes it takes more of the new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) when we inject in small portions and in layers. Sessions are needed for that but results last longer. Fat resorption is less if we inject less than 0.1 cc at a time and allow to heal it up and take its blood supply.Once it settles we can go for a second session to layer it up on the previous one.

Q. If I opt for surgery how long could I expect the results to last?

Ans:- If done with specialized sophisticated instruments, by the seasoned and skilled hands of a plastic surgeon, and new vessels formation (neovascularization) goes well, it can last much much longer (for years long). But remember to keep the body weight in limits too and don't lose weight too fast.

Also, can u give a ballpark figure on how much it would cost?

ANS:- $4900-$8900 All depends on a lot of factors. Most health insurances will not cover this procedure. So it is your own cost to pay by yourself.

And lastly what does the average person do when the fat transfer is absorbed by the body after a few years and they are back to square one? Would it even be worth it? Thanks again

ANS:- People go for a repeat procedure if they are still beauty conscious at the age it dissolved. Usually they go then for a Filling substance other than fat but nothing is comparable to fat I will say.
