Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that losartan is an antihypertensive drugs.

It does not elevate blood pressure, but it lowers it instead. Hypotension is a known adverse effect related to Losartan.

Coming to this point, it is important investigating for the real cause related to your blood pressure spikes. I would recommend consulting with your attending physician and performing some tests to investigate for the possible causes:

- a resting ECG
- a chest X ray study
- some blood lab tests (complete blood count, PCR, sedimentation rate, fasting glucose, kidney and liver function tests, thyroid hormone levels, blood electrolytes).

I would not recommend reducing Losartan doses, before consulting with your doctor and performing these tests.

Meanwhile, I recommend you to have some rest and avoid physical activity until your blood pressure values are become normal again.

Certainly Galicia and beet juice will help for this purpose too, as they are known to reduce blood pressure in a natural way.

I advice you to closely monitor your blood pressure during these days (in sitting position after 10 minutes of total relax), write those values down for several days and refer them to your attending physician.

Usually antihypertensive drugs need a period of some days up to a week to show their effects and achieve a new blood pressure equilibrium. If your blood pressure values are still high after a week of taking Losartan 50mg twice daily, you should discuss with your doctor on adding an new antihypertensive drug to your therapy (a calcium channel blocker or hydroclorothyazide).

I would also recommend you some lifestyle modifications which can help you manage better your blood pressure values:

- reduce salt and caffeine intake in your diet
- perform a lot of physical activity (walking, aerobics, recreational sports) (certainly not during your blood pressure spikes)
- try to reduce some weight if you are overweight.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
