Swollen Tongue On Right Side. What Could Be The Reason?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Jul 2012
Question: Woke up this morning and my tongue was swollen on the right side. 61 old male, fairly good health.

Had a physical last week, BP 140/100 blood work, BUN was high 27, creatinine was 1.39. Doctors notes - possible dehydration, kidneys slowing down, need BP lowered to 130/90 ASAP, retest 3months.

Hello & welcome to XXXXXXX forum

1) Sudden onset swelling of whole/ apart of tongue showed some sort of allergy and you may face respiratory discomfort, urticaria, itching

2) You have not mentioned about associated symptoms such as pain, ulcer at swollen part of tongue and other medication taking for control of blood pressure. Amlodipine & ACE inhibitors, frequently these medications are known to cause angioneurotic edema. Tongue swelling is part during this condition.

3) Although your serum creatinine is raised (normal is 1.20) & deranged kidney function may cause swelling at face, but it doesn't seem to be the cause of swollen tongue.

4) yes, your blood pressure must be in controlled limit and considering your age, it must be around 130/85 mm Hg. Raised blood pressure may further deteriorate your kidney function.

You should consult to General Physician / Allergy specialist.
