Trying To Conceive. Have Mild Migraine And Thyroid Level Imbalance. Safe To Take Sibelium?
My wife wants to know if this sibelium tablet would affect her conceiving
As per your question regarding Sibelium - Sibelium (Flunarizine) is a type of medicine which is a 'calcium channel blocker', very useful in prevention of migraine attacks. It does NOT cause problems in conceiving.
There are many other 'calcium channel blockers' used in pregnancy for blood pressure and prevention of pre-term labour. Most of these do not have any harmful effects on conceiving and the human baby.
Specifically Sibelium - animal studies show there may be some problems in babies when used in early pregnancy but data for human pregnancy and human babies is not known. Therefore it is recommended that it should be used with caution in early pregnancy.
Your wife can take Sibelium for her migraine while trying for pregnancy but once she conceives, it would be wise to review whether she needs to take Sibelium any more. If she can function without taking it during pregnancy, it may be better to stop Sibelium on conceiving. Till then there should be no problem.
May i suggest that your wife focus on weight reduction - even a 5% weight loss will increase her chances of conceiving; her thyroid medicine dose also will decrease.
5% weight loss - suppose your wife weighs 70 kgms, then 3.5 kgm weight loss will improve her hormone balance.
Further, yoga and walking are known to help greatly in cutting down stress levels associated with inability to conceive; they increase endorphins and well-being, feel-good factors; improve oxygen supply to tissues including brain. Not only will these help her headache but also increase her chances of conceiving.
I hope this helps answer your question.
