US Showed Diffuse Coarse Echotexture. Meaning?

Question: I recently had an ultrasound which said there is diffuse coarse echotexture. Everything else was normal and normal blood tests. What does this mean.? Worried
That question was supposed to clarify that it is the liver.

Hi,
thanks for writing in.
Coarse echo texture refers to loss of the normal uniform appearance of the liver. It suggests the onset of alteration in the regenerative potential of the liver. It is a fore runner of either cirrhosis, non cirrhotic portal fibrosis and in cases of advanced fatty liver.
The findings need to be correlated with liver function tests and viral markers. If these investigations are normal then a wait and watch policy with medications like liver tonics is adequate.
If investigations are abnormal or viral markers are positive then specific treatment is mandatory.
I hope this answers your query.
