Undergone Angioplasty For A Heart Stent. Looking For Cure, Exercise And Diet Plan

Posted on Tue, 19 Feb 2013
Question: Hi

My dad had undergone angioplasty for a heart stent in January'13. I'm very tensed about his diet and daily life as he used to live a diffrent life style. I need some help and recommendations in knowing what type of care he needs to take now to live longer.

1. What is the life time of sten? We went for medicated stent and doctor said that it is the best one available today. I'm more worried that whether stent may lead to bypass surgery later? Is it true?

2. What happens when the stent malfuntions? What about after the life time of stent?

3. what type diet he is allowed to take? Please elaborate like can he take take tea, milk etc.? Any type of fruit or fruit juice is allowed?

4. what type of exercise is allowed now? It is merely 3rd week post stenting now.

5. Doctor said to consult him again in May'13 and the hospital is my near to my hometown. I live and work in Bangalore and hence I would like to take him here and consult a good doctor in Bangalore? Please suggest whether he can go for atrain journey of 15 hours now? Is there any good doctor in Bangalore for my dad's checkup?

Thank you for your help.

Hi
Your questions are very pertinent and I hope the following answers will be helpful to you
1. It is good that you went for a medicated stent, they last longer and are more durable as compared to bare metal stent. There is nothing like a lifespan of a stent, they last long as much as the cardiac risk factors are taken care of. Stents don't lead to bypass surgery, it is the extensive disease which leads to bypass surgeries. If not cared for with a good lifestyle management any body can land up with multiple blocks in the coronary arteries, thereby being indicated for a bypass surgery. This it is important to realize that bypass surgery can be avoided with good lifestyle management
2. The one and the only wrong thing which can happen in a stent is restenosis, and this happens when the cardiac risk factors(read lifestyle) is not taken care of. If it happens then chest pain and other symptoms can occur, which may have to be taken care of .
3. With the Available information I can tell you that he needs low cholesterol diet which includes avoiding red meat, chicken skin, egg yellow, thick milk, ghee, and hard oils etc, you can get a list from any website or a qualified dietician. Regarding the fruit and fruit juices it depends if he is a diabetic or not, if his kidneys are ok etc.
4. As far exercise is concerned, he can start his walks initially on flat surface for say about ten mins and gradually increase the distance, duration and the gradient as much as he can tolerate. Remember the purpose of any intervention is to bring back the quality of life as before if not better.
5. He can undertake the journey without any trouble as long he is continuing the treatment given. There are many Doctors in Bangalore who would be able to take care of him, but if there is a qualified person available near to the place of his regular residence, nothing like that you may continue with the same Doctor

I hope the above answers most your queries and anxieties

Bye for now and good health and long life to your dad

Hi again,

He can lift moderate weights say about 5 to 10 kgs. Statically, that is let him lift a bucket half full of water, but let him not carry it around unless his follow up, say after 3 months is normal.

He can routinely perform 'Namaaz' as before without any problems.

He can also ride and drive without any worry.

I still feel that your dad should be followed up with the same Doctor who performed the Angioplasty and stenting unless he is symptomatic and needs more advanced care.

I hope your queries are addressed. Let me know if you need further clarifications.
If all your queries are answered, please close this discussion.

Bye for now and good health to your dad again...
