What Are Chances Of HIV After Having Unprotected Sex?

Question: I had a risky encounter on this past XXXXXXX 24. The risk was unprotected vaginal sex with a man. The man sees my worry but refuses to get tested. So, I had a rna test done 13 days after , a duo test done 23 days after, and a stat pak on the 6 th week after. They came back negative. I am suppose to get testing with a counselor on week 8 with another stat pak test. As of now how is this looking ? I am so scared and will never put myself in this situation, I can't sleep at night .

I am so sorry to hear about this exposure and all the disturbing thoughts this has caused you. With up to 6weeks without any signs of antibodies to HIVV1/2 is very promising. Chances are higher that you may come out clean from this scary encounter.

Tests that look for antibodies require at least three months for certainty to be obtained. I think you would do just fine. However, if you are too disturbed by this, I will suggest that you go on and get a PCR that would provide definitive answers right now. With that, you would have a relaxed and settled mind on what the exact outcome is. Further testing would not be required if you get the PCR done. Ask your treating doctor and counselor about this.

Thank you so much , you are great. I should have mentioned that I tried to do a duo test and they just contacted me that something happened to my blood vials and they can't use them. They also said to get my blood redrawn for free since this happened. So I was thinking of going this Monday to get it redone even though that's very annoying, because I got this done 3 weeks ago and they just contacted me yesterday . I see you say take the pcr and be done with worry. My question is will the duo be just as conclusive as the pcr . I'm approaching entering my 7th week after encounter. The test is already paid for I just never bothered retaking it.

Hi,

Duo looks for antibodies and parts of the virus(p24 particles). This is a better test than stat oak but not as efficient as PCR. I will recommend you take it and let's see what you get. But like I mentioned, prospects are encouraging and be calm and relaxed about it. We would get there soon.
