What Are Postmenopausal Symptoms Of Low Estrogen?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I have been suffering "menopause"symptoms for over 7 years, i am 43 years old. Last month my doctor put me on HRT, "ellest 1mg". I also had a blood test before i started taking the HRT. I have just finished the first packet today but have had a really heavy period for the last 9 days, with clots. I have also had really bad tummy pains and back pain for 5 days, I know HRT can start periods again, mine have been absent for over a year, but I wasn't expecting this. I had a telephone appointment with gp today. He said my blood tests were confusing, he said my FSH levels were over 30 which indicated post menopause but that my Oetrogen levels were above 800 which contradicted that. He said i need to have an appointment to get a scan/ internal exam. Unfortunately there are no appointments for another 3 weeks and i am now a little confused and worried. I dont feel myself and have been feeling quite dizzy and wishy washy for the last 5 days but I put this down to the heavy perood. I am now wanting to not take any more of the HRT as am not sure they are doing me any good. I am also confused as to why my oestrogen levels were so high before i started the HRT and will they be even higher now and could they be causing the dizziness??

Brief Answer:
nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
Your picture is perfectly normal and there is nothing to worry.
Estrogen levels can fluctuate and also depend on external intake of hormones.
These periods are also just a withdrawal ones and were bound to cone after stopping the therapy.
You still should get an ultrasound whenever possible and a delay of 3-4 weeks will not cause any change in management.
This dizziness is related to the weakness caused by periods after a long time and will be gone soon.
In my opinion you should continue HRT as advised to have a good perimenopausal transition.
Wish you all the best and in case you have any questions I will be glad to answer.

Hi thank you i feel better from your comment, am still a little confused as to wether i am post menapause or not though as my results seem to contradict each other. Before hrt my blood results were fsh 72.4( which indicates post menapause) but LH was 105.9 and orstradiol 851??? So i am taking HRT but still not sure if my results indicate menopause. Thank you Thara.

Brief Answer:
estradiol is not a good indicator

Detailed Answer:
I understand your confusion Mrs. Thara.
But estradiol is not a good indicator of menopause and is so much non specific that newer guidelines now don't recommend getting tested for estradiol.
FSH is the ultimate decision making hormone.
So you have menopause for sure.
