Question: My 28 year old son has recently suffered a psychotic break. He was diagnosed as manic-depressive with psychosis. He drove through red lights and was in an accident. He was hospitalized 4 times since Christmas. He is on Haldol, depakote, vistaril, cogent in, and a ptsd drug. I am worried about the effects on his brain esp from haldol. This happened one other time 10 yrs ago. he says he feels better than he ever has on these meds and said he's been sick since he was 5 yrs old and hiding it. We are now in never never land. I don't think he can hold a job at this point though he has a very high IQ. Any suggestions

Brief Answer:
Seems to be a bipolar mood disorder

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for using health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

He seems to have been having a bipolar mood disorder and at present having a manic mood swing. He needs proper medicationsand the medications that you have stated (divalproex sodium and haloperidol) are good drugs for his illness. These generally show their effect in 1-2 weeks and probably you need to wait until then. If symptoms are very bad then you may get him admitted in a inpatient set up until he improves.
Hope I am able to help you with your concerns.
If you have any further query, do let me know.
Thanks and regards
