What Are The Adverse Effects Of Elevated Triglycerides On Health?
Right diet, exercise, some supplement and medication should do the magic
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I am Dr Mody and would be addressing your concern,
Now triglycerides on the higher side also is a risk factor for atherosclerosis, ie. It increases chances of heart problems, stroke and other diseases. So we should be treating it.
Now for your Mother our aim should be to bring it under 150 by 3 months.
So u would briefly suggest the following points.
1) cut on oils and fats in diet. Strict no to fried and preserved food. May shift to healthier oil like olive. If non vegetarian avoid red meat and egg yellow. Take atleast 2 serving of fish per week.
2) encourage your mother to exercise, brisk walking atleast 30 mins a day should be our aim
3) you may start with supplement like omega 3 fatty acid capsule. 1-2 gm in divided dosage. Flax seed is good vegetable source of omega 3 fatty acids
4) now I would like to know her other risk factors , if she is diabetic, hypertensive has history of heart problem in the past or strong family history for the same. I would recommend her a single tablet which is a combination of atorvastatin /rosuvastatin with fenofibrate at night before sleep.
Repeat lipid profile after 3 months.
Hopefully I could help.
Regards Dr Priyank Mody
My mother is complete vegetarian and does not take fish .
She is not diabetic but has high pressure problem and she is taking stamlo 2.5 on regular basis.
Please suggest accordingly
Continue stamlo, change her diet preference & may wait for a month or two
Detailed Answer:
Hi, as I said cutting on oily, fried and preserved food like chips, pickles etc would be helpful as oil and salt are the most important preservatives used and because of her blood pressure she should consume less salt too.
All nuts, beans, garlic and green vegetables would overall improve the lipid s. 1-2 serving of fruits per day.
Mostly she wouldn't even take that cod fish oil capsules which are very rich source of omega 3 fatty acid, which will help bring triglycerides, so in capsule form I'd she can take it it would be good as it just doesn't decrease triglycerides, but over all health benefit is great . Flax seed or Flax oil is a good alternative which is rich in omega3 fatty acid
Good oils for hrr would be olive, canola, soybean, safflower, corn.
Cut of pure sugars ( less than 6 tablespoons in all forms per day) and aerated drinks if at all she takes
Exercise is still an important component.
Also as her risk is not very high, she may change her diet and lifestyle and do away with drugs for time being and we can repeat a lipid profile after 2-3 and at till higher start on medication for the same, which would be the one I had suggested.
Alternatively we start on a low dose and taper is off as she becomes more regular with her diet.
Hoping I could help. Regards.
