What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Prick Of A Fish Hook?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: Hi recently I went fishing, and while doing so I helped a young boy pull a hook out of his finger,... A minute later I accidently pricked my hand with the same fish hook (can't remember if there was visible blood on hook )Is there any chance that an infection such as HIV could be transmitted to me from the boy? (not sure of his HIV status). Should I get tested? And how long till I should? Kind regards

Brief Answer:
There are possibilities of HIV transmission by prick.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for query. I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.
Welcome to health care magic.
I have gone through the details.

If the blood was injected in you, there are possibilities of transmission of HIV by needle/hook prick. The chances are less as it may be unlikely for the boy to be infected with HIV.

If you know the status of the boy you can relax.
If unknown you can go for HIV tests based on time since exposure.
You can get HIV RNA PCR if beyond 10 days of exposure. Antibodies test for HIV if 3 months post exposure.
You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you

Thankyou Dr... Say the boy was HIV positive, are the chances high? I live in a country that doesn't have a high rate of HIV in children, but do you think I should get tested? Kind regards

Brief Answer:
Get tested to relieve your anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.
If the rate of HIV in children is too low, then the chances are almost nil.
If he is positive then the chances are little higher than sexual mode of transmission.
You can get tested for HIV if in doubt about the status to relieve your anxiety.
You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you
