default
Posted on Tue, 19 May 2015
Question: Good morning, I had sex last night with an HIV positive person, I did wear a condom, and there was no alcohol involved. should I visit the ER foursome antivirals? or possible HIV test? is there anything that I need to worry about in the future I'm having sex with someone who may or may not tell me that they are positive?

Brief Answer:
If you are sure condom was correctly used then no need for antivirals

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The transmission risk of HIV through protected sex with a HIV positive woman is about 1 in 4000.

2. If there was unprotected sex then the risk was about 1 in 100.

3. If you confirm about having protected sex and the condom did not break then there is no need to visit ER. However, if you are unsure about the condom break then please visit ER immediately and take post exposure prophylaxis antiviral.

4. It is better to do the HIV fourth generation rapid test which tests for HIV 1 / 2 antibodies and p24 antigen. This test should be done at 30 days for accurate result.

5. Everyone does not tell the truth so it is your job to take care of your safety and use condoms every time even if your partner tells that she is not HIV positive.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
