What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Protected Vaginal Intercourse?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
i had protected sex using a condom with a sex worker at dubai 75 days ago...it was the first time in my life i did that and did it only once..i got tested today after 75 days my report was negative..i was tested by rapid antibody test taking blood sample...so my questions are
am i safe from HIV?
is my 75 days (almost 11 weeks) rapid antibody test conclusive and can it change after 12 weeks or months?
do i need any further testing?
can i have unprotected sex with my wife now...coz i waited for 75 days...
regards
Please find details below
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.
1. Since you had protected vaginal sexual intercourse, therefore the risk of HIV is almost nil. It is about less than 1 in a million. HIV is in two types, HIV 1 virus causes 98 to 99 percent of cases in XXXXXXX Middle east and XXXXXXX and 1 to 2 percent of HIV is because of HIV 2 virus.
2. However you did a good thing by getting a HIV screening test done at 75 days.
3. I hope you took the 4th generation rapid test which is one of the latest technique for HIV screening. This tests for HIV 1 and 2 antibodies and p24 antigen.
4. If you had unprotected sex then I would have suggested another test at 6 months. However as you have had protected sex and the risk is really low therefore I consider that the 3 months test is enough. However please read below to know more accurately about HIV and its testing.
5. It is said that 3 months testing by HIV 1 and 2 and p24 combo is conclusive for HIV 1. However there is a small chance of HIV 2 infection which will not be conclusive on combo test done at 3 months. HIV 2 is always tested by antibodies. Therefore a HIV 1 and 2 antibodies test after 6 months is suggested for those who have unprotected sex.
6. There is a 1 percent chance in those who are infected that antibodies can appear after 3 months. In almost 100 percent of patients the antibodies appear by 6 months.
7. As your risk of HIV is very less, there should be nothing to worry if your 75 days or 3 months test is normal. However having unprotected sex with your wife before 6 months is entirely your choice and after keeping in mind that you fall in low risk group because you had protected sex.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

i had tri dot rapid test done at lab....is it fourth genrataion?
Your test seems to be old tridot
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.
1. The fourth generation rapid test is better known as HIV Tridot + Ag. It means that this also includes p24 antigen testing. In the only Tridot test, it is only HIV 1 and HIV 2 antibodies. Therefore your test looks like the older tridot test.
2. In USA there is almost nil HIV 2 transmission. Therefore CDC says that Rapid 4th generation is enough at 12 weeks or 3 months.
3. The old tridot result might change in about 1 percent of HIV positive patients after 12 weeks.
Hope your query is answered.

Please do Tridot and Ag at 12 weeks and then stop
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.
1. It is true that since you had protected sex therefore the chance of HIV infection is least and in that having HIV 2 infection is almost negligible.
2. Coming to the test you want to do at 75 days, keeping the smallest risk of HIV 1, I recommend going for the Tridot + Ag test if available at your place. This will test for HIV 1 and HIV 2 and p24 antigen.
3. Negative p24 antigen at 12 weeks is conclusive for no HIV 1 infection.
4. All over the world doing p24 test is becoming popular and more reliable for HIV 1 test.
5. My suggestion to you will be get Tridot + Ag test done and then relax. If you do only Tridot then my recommendation will be to repeat it at 6 months.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
