What Are The Chances Of Hereditary Angioedema Remaining Dormant?
Question: My dad has been diagnosed with HAEA type 3. There's a 50 percent chance that I have it. I don't have any symptoms except for occasional redness/rashes, but no swelling. Should I get tested for it anyway? Is there a chance that it is currently dormant?
Brief Answer:
It is unlikely to be dormant. You are likely to be negative for HAEA
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Hereditary angioedema is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, which means one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder. So it is very unlikely that you have the disease without any manifestations. It is unlikely to be 'dormant'. Although sometimes gene expression or penetrance may vary from individual to individual, on practical scenario you can assume yourself negative and need not get tested for the same.
Hope that helps.
