What Are The Chances Of Pregnancy Despite Having Slight Alteration Of The Timings Of Birth Control Pills?

Question: I have been on the pill for about 6 months. I take it between 10pm-12am every night. I had a tummy buy (diarrhoea only) for about 12-16hours on Monday night/Tuesday morning. (Day 20/21 of my pill) I took my pill late that night, about 3 hours late, to make sure I could sleep and let it absorb. I slept for about 7hours then woke back up and continued the tummy bug. I continued to feel slightly sick all week though diarrhoea stopped and I had just slightly loose stools. I kept taking the pill a few hours later each night to ensure I could sleep just after taking it. My boyfriend and I had sex on Thursday (Day 23 of pack) and he came inside me. I took the pill late again that night to ensure it was absorbed as I slept. I am now on day 25 and the start of my sugar pills. I have had little breakthrough bleeding/spotting all week. Though my period won't usually start properly until day 4 of the sugar pills. (Day 28) (I have been under immense stress this week due to work and relationship problems - lack of sleep and intense crying/emotional stress.) My question is: Would there be any risk of pregnancy? I intended to stop the pill after this packet and would like to still do so without worrying about the risk of falling pregnant.

Brief Answer:
Very less chances of a pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
You have been quite regular with the pill.
ALso, the slight alteration of the timings occurred after day 21, after which ovulation is least likely.
I do not think there is a risk of pregnancy in your case.
You have not missed any pill and ensured atleast 7 hours of absorption for each pill, inspite of the diarrhoea.
The slight irregular spotting often occurs while on the pill , particularly if the timing has been inconsistent.
If you intend to stop the pill, you would be using another method I assume ?
Just to be absolutely sure you can take a pregnancy test before resuming a new method, which is unnecessary ( the test ) if you have a proper period .
All the best

Hi, thanks for your prompt answer, I appreciate helping to put my mind at ease.

Just a few clarifications:

I had the severe diarrhoea just on day 20 (overnight) /21 (morning) - this isn't stuffing it up, being the last few days of most likely time of ovulation?

I will be using condoms while I give my body a break, that will be my other method.

You said to be absolutely sure I take a pregnancy test before resuming new method (i.e. another birth control pill or likewise) if I haven't had a proper period - does this period I will get now being on the sugar pills count as a proper period? Because can I expect a regular period the following month, being off the pill?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Clarified.

Detailed Answer:
THank you for the appreciation.
Day 20 / 21, is frankly less likely to be the ovulatory period, given regular cycles, and the pills taken before the diarrhoea would anyways suppress ovulation.
I think you are in the all clear for sure.
This breakthrough bleeding does not count as a proper period.
Before starting the new method, yes, please take a pregnancy test.
And being off the pill, you could expect irregularities in your cycles, which is why a pregnancy test is conclusive.
Take care.
