What Are The Effects Of High PTH Levels On Health?
Question: Please explain the impact of high parathyroid hormone results and should I be concerned?
Brief Answer:
Parathyroid
Detailed Answer:
Two of the most common causes of an elevated parathyroid hormone level are
1) Vitamin D deficiency
2) An overactive parathyroid gland typically resulting in a high blood calcium level
So the impact of a high parathyroid hormone level is directly related to the cause and the context.
In vitamin D deficiency, the parathyroid hormone levels normalize after adequate vitamin D supplementation.
In the second condition, the over active parathyroid gland needs to be either surgically removed or controlled with medication. If this is not done, then the persistently elevated parathyroid hormone can over time lead to
high blood calcium levels
kidney stones
kidney damage
osteoporosis (weak bones)

Calcium is valued at 10.0 and Vitamin D at 41. I am now scheduled for a 24 hour Urine, which was normal last year and and a bone density and addition blood work, all of which were normal last year. Is it possible to have an elivated level without anything bening actually wrong?
Thank you for your help.
Thank you for your help.
Brief Answer:
Follow up
Detailed Answer:
Uncommonly, it is possible that you are one of the small percentage of normal individuals whose parathyroid level is on the mildly higher side.
But it is important to evaluate you thoroughly before concluding this.
So there are conditions like
Hyperparathyroidism
Hyperphosphatemia
Familial Hypocalciuric Hypercalcemia
to name a few.
These can be complex to diagnose and so it is best left to your endocrinologist to handle.
Tests like
Ionized calcium
serum phosphorus
serum magnesium
24 hour urine calcium and creatinine (which you are scheduled for now)
are helpful in differentiating between the various possibilities.
