What Are The Expected Long-term Effects Of Taking Celexa For Depression?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Dec 2015
Question: Have you seen a patient put on celexa when, in fact, they didn't really need it (misdiagnosed)? I have seen people who have had personalities altered and years of trying to pick up the pieces after such consequences with anti-depressants. What are expected long-term effects? (This is for my 18-year-old son - honestly, he feels too young and has not had any kind of patterns in his life for such a medication. I believe this is a situational depression, not clinical). Should I be hesitant about celexa? What are your thoughts about neuroreplete, a more natural remedy?

Brief Answer:
Celexa concerns

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Citalopram use is based on indication. Psychiatric issues are often diagnosed and assessed keeping in mind the support that the patient can use at this point of time. Behavioral cognitive therapy, psychotherapy and family support are always offered, first. Drugs like citalopram are effective at tackling a number of issues and help the patient recover faster and better, if proper targeting and use is ensured. It is indicated in depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder to name a few. The XXXXXXX mental state exam and the general interaction with his doctor ultimately decides whether citalopram is needed or not. If you are not sure then you may take a second opinion by consulting a psychiatrist in person. You mentioned ,neuroreplete. The only herbal or natural product that has shown benefit in depression is St Johns Wart (Hypericum perforatum). I would advise against neuroreplete as sufficient evidence is not available to support its use. However, its not the first line drug. Citalopram is well tolerated and does not have any frequent serious side effects. Side effects may also vary from person to person. It can cause dry mouth, increased sweating and nausea. Initially a sedative may be added for two weeks as SSRIs are very good at stimulating the brain and in doing so there can be rebound anxiety. Celexa use can be reassessed at 1, 3 and 6 th month. It can be gradually discontinued after 6 months to a year based on the improvement that the patient shows.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
